3 Thriller Films

1st Thriller film :Stranger On a Train By Hitchcock (1951)
The film starts with string music at the being and opening credits and the background is an arch way that leads to the train station. A cab drives up and focus on the door a pair of brogues shoes steps out the camera follows these shoes the background a slightly out of focus. The sound of the shoes walking to the station is heightened/enhanced. Another cab draws up again and the camera yet again follows the shoes to the station, the camera starts to jump cut from one shoe to the other. one after the other the shoes climb onto the train and find a place to sit then the other pair of shoes that are not as fancy what shows that they are more middle or working class sits next to each other. The camera moves up and focuses on the two men. The working class man introduces himself and is priring on the famous tennis player asking many questions you can this man is comfortabole you can see this man is uncomfortable the man moves his chair towards him.

2nd Thriller Film: Sin City directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (2005)
Starts off with a black & white city land city landscape at night a women who os also in black and white but has a red dress,(it is a bird eye view shot) she looks acroos at the city night. jazz music is playing. A Voiceover of josh Harnett who plays a the man in the film starts to speak about the women. The camera moves down to show an over the shoulder shot of Josh walking toward the women. He speaks and says he has been watching her for day this adds some questions to the audience watching.He starts complenment her and the camera moves to an over the shoulder shot of Josh looking at her he talks about her eyes and they light up green.They have a ciggeret and there is a emphasis on the sound of the lighter.He moves to a long shot Josh is still Narrotorating over the top.The lighting turns darker when he says he loves her. It becomes a close up shot. HE SHOTS HER !

3RD Thriler film:A clockwork orange directed by Stanley Kubrick (1971)
This film starts with a plain red screen, the music is eletro keyboard and drums to reflect when the film was made and the quirkyness of the story. It jump to a close up of the clockwork orange man looking down with a sinster look on his face, it is a dark background but the mans face is very light.It starts to slowly move out to show him drinking milk the camera zooms out more to show 3 other men also dressed the same as him drinking milk the camera keeps on zooming out to show a room of naked life size dolls in a table shape postions. The man who plays the main character starts talking about his friends andf the milk bar the dark lighting then turns into a flash of white light.

Well done Rose some detailed work here. Always try to describe media language first and then analyse effects and connotations. 'A cab drives up and focus on the door a pair of brogues shoes steps out the camera follows these shoes the background a slightly out of focus.' A cab appears in shot and we cut to a close up of a pair of brogue shoes stepping out. The camera follows the shoes against an out of focuse background. This creates a desire to see the character and to see him in context.

You have looked at media language and 'mise-en-scene' can you comment on the narrative structure and use of characters in these openings.
